Schools of Veterinary Medicine: Teaching Hospital Sites
The schools below have treatment centers and oncology departments staffed by students and board certified veterinary oncologists. Contact the school nearest to you for further information about obtaining treatment. Additionally, some of the schools and affiliated teaching hospitals have excellent online information resources, those provided below as well.

What does Board-certification mean?  A veterinarian that is Board-certified has completed a residency and testing requirements within their specialty. A residency is a two to three year program spent under the guidance of a board certified veterinarian in a specialty practice or in a university veterinary medical hospital.

What is an veterinary oncologist?  A veterinary oncologist has received board certification in the study of cancer in dogs, cats, ferrets, birds and other exotic and domestic animals. These veterinarians are specially trained to diagnose and treat animals with cancer.

Where do they work?  Most oncologists work in specialty veterinary hospitals and universities and treat dogs and cats with cancer on a regular basis. Some people choose surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy for their pets with cancer.

What do the assorted abbreviations mean that one sees behind these specialists' names? They indicate the certifying body. ACVIM: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine; DACIM: Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine; ACVR: American College of Veterinary Radiology; DACVR: Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Radiology, ACVS: American College of Veterinary Surgery, ACVN: American College of Veterinary Nutrition.

AU researchers awarded $1.4 million to study new canine lymphoma treatment  October 2006

“What makes Auburn’s research unique is that we are modifying the virus to target, or specifically infect, the lymphoma tumor cell,” Dr. Smith said. “We have also altered the virus so that it encodes a protein, which, when it comes in contact with the drug, converts the drug into a toxic substance and that toxin kills the lymphoma cell.”
